Cyclone crits you for 35,210. Your power dies.

July 16, 2009

TornadoI’m here to apologize for my spotty posting recently. Between sudden out-of-state trips for family emergencies and the remarkable number of violent storms across the midwest, it’s been hard for me to get things out on time. Heck, the last storm left about 1,000 people here without power for three days, our house included.

So.

This is what I’m going to do. I’m going to start writing posts a week in advance and queuing them up so I always have something out by 10 am on Tuesday.

Good?

Good.

I’ll start by postponing this week’s post until next week, and I’ll always post on time from here on. Bear’s honor! So, be sure you come back next tuesday for another exciting installment of Going Bearfoot!

Why the Old Country is also the “Motherland”

May 5, 2009

logo-warcraftNerd that I am, and addicted as I am, WoW Insider is my home page. Whenever I open Firefox, unless its by taking a link from somewhere else, WoW Insider is the thing that pops up. I don’t agree with a lot of things, or even most things that get put up there (And I’m seriously sick to death of hearing about Karatechop. SRSLY guys, find something new!) But it sits there anyway because it’s a good place to get a quick run down of some of the big news that comes up. In the vein of not really agreeing with things, one of the articles this morning was titled “The End of Vanilla WoW” in which the idea was proposed that now that we have Death Knights and all, leveling any other class is simply too much work.

Now, there are two philosophies to approaching the game. (Really there are far, far, more philosophies to the game than I could ever cover, but right now we’re talking about leveling and it’s my blog-o-verse so I can simplify it as much as I want to. Neener neener neener!) One is that Warcraft is a great game with tons of content that works for a number of playstyles, and another is that “The game doesn’t actually start until max level.” I’m in the former camp. The concept that everything is crud until you hit 80 (Or 70, or 60 back in the day, probably 90 in the future) makes me wonder why people even got hooked enough to level their first character up anyway. A Multimedia Extravaganza

April 28, 2009

multimedia

I’ve been meaning for awhile now to do a post where I can collect all the little Warcrafty videos and whatnot that are completely awesome and can be relinked to easily. This is, and will be, eternally under construction though. I’ve already gone on into Wednesday missing a Tuesday post for the first time just populating this thing. More to come soon, some of these links will die. If you’re talkative and want to add something or notice something is broken, please comment or contact me and I’ll keep at it!

Machinima Videos

Craft of War: BLIND

This has been listed on many another blog and site, but it really deserves to be here because the animation is truly a wonder to see. If you’re not much familiar with Warcraft videos I suggest you DON’T watch this first, because it’ll spoil everything for you and everything will look like crap in comparison. The quality is higher than YouTube, the music isn’t what I’d pick but that’s the producer’s choice, and there are a couple Matrix-style flying martial arts parts of the battle but really, it’s great. I think my favorite parts are the shadow with the lantern at the beginning and the subtle way the elf’s eyebrow is animated in her expression just before she runs away.

Oxhorn’s Page

Oxhorn has recently gotten a little… erm, vocal about his religious and political affiliations, but just about everything from The Great Kodo and the Tauren’s Kilt up to the Medley video is absolutely wonderful. You’ll want to avoid Orcs in Space unless you’re a bit slaphappy, and you’ll need to watch everything else before the Medley, but it’s good stuff. If you’re Horde (or possibly even if you play for the blue team) you’ll probably end up walking around doing housework singing the Anti-Elf Anthem.

Myndflame

I first found Myndflame in the first Blizzard-Xfire Machinima contest with their entry Illegal Danish. This is an awesome, classic piece of work with an all-original soundtrack. I didn’t like their first movie, Zinwrath, quite as much but Illegal Danish and it’s sequel are pure quotable awesomeness. Even better, all-original music that gets stuck in your head like MC Raiders and L2Play.

Dungeons and Dragons

A spoof of a different audio track, hilarious. You just don’t know what kind of evil kids may get themselves into until they’re screaming for Mountain Dew from the kitchen… Read the rest of this entry ?

Mass Abductions

February 28, 2009

abductionSo, as anyone paying attention to WoWInsider or a number of the various other places we find blogs about our game might know, Resto4Life is shutting down due to a “bun in the oven” and such things.

The somewhat unsettling thing, however, is that this seems to be symptomatic of a much larger movement within the “Blog-o-sphere”. Checking through my bookmarks, at least five of them (R4L included) are shutting down, considering shutting down, or just moving in a new direction.

  • Resto4Life – As noted above, totally understand the whole having kids thing. It is almost like one of those “life-changing” sort of deals.
  • Gun Loving Dwarf Chick – Has taken the “moving in a new direction” approach. Closing GLDC to work on priesty stuff and the Twisting Nether podcasts.
  • The Rambling Bear – Hasn’t been updated in months, no official post on it though.
  • That Damn Role Player – Is considering leaving the game altogether. and…
  • Hots-n-Dots – Disappeared like it had never existed… (Yeah, the link is broken, but I had to make it match the other four. HAD to. Obsessive? No, why would you ask that?)

This is sadness, and yet life does go on. They all had very good reasons (or at least I’m assuming that wherever we aren’t told what happened, it was a good reason). I’ll be sad to see all these guys go, but I wish them all the best of luck with whatever they are doing, or will be doing, now.

-Mita

P.s. – Yeah, I kinda broke that whole only posting on Tuesdays thing but hey, at least this is activity in the right direction, eh?
